July 29, 30 and 31 Last days in Newfoundland

The old being replaced with the new.  Note the original house was wood and now they are adding a layer of insulation and vinyl siding, as well as new windows.  The difference must be incredible since the older homes had very little insulation, if any.  In a brutal winter it must have been miserable.  You can understand why vinyl is so popular here and I would say that 99% of the homes we have seen in Newfoundland were vinyl.

The only place we saw homes was along the coast and with vast separation between the towns.  Everything on the inland side of the highway is vacant land.  We asked Alice, the campground owner at Codroy who owned that land and could someone purchase it to build?  Her answer was, well, I guess you'd have to write a letter to the Queen...all that interior land is "Queen's Land".

The green highlighted area is our route while in Newfoundland.  We gave it our best shot!   It truly is an amazing place and we came away with so much respect for the folks that live there.  Every one we met was kind and helpful.  Just surviving with so little amenities gave us a huge respect for the resilience of the people here.  The terrain was rugged and nothing could be easy, not for building or for just surviving, but they do it day after day and seem to be happy and content.
