August 4 Exploring the East Coast Trail of PEI

PEI is about the exact opposite of Newfoundland.  Here the red soil makes for wonderful farming.  Driving around, the scenery is like a maize of beautiful colors of red, yellow and green.  We were thinking that if you were looking down for a plane the place would look like a magnificent quilt.

Of course fishing is a large part of the economy here as well as farming.

Lots of beautiful old homes on PEI and most are very well maintained.

The owner of the shop told us you take these giant clams and cook them on the BBQ.  Sounded yummy to us.

PEI is broken up in to 3 parts.  This is a map of the Eastern Coastal Route.  There's one for Central and one for Western.  Tourism is a huge part of the economy here and they have made it easy to find your way around and make the most of your stay on the island.  We gave it our best shot to see as much as we could.

At the moment it's not lobster season, but the traps are lined up and ready to go as soon as it starts.  One of the things we noticed is that all the boats are in immaculate condition.  They really take good care of the boats.

Approximately 3/4 of the island is farm land, right to the sea.  Many of the farms also had lobster boats sitting in the yard so you know they work both the land and the sea.

Notice how few homes there are.

We drove through an Amish section of the island.

Again, unlike Newfoundland, many of the small towns had shops, restaurants and historic places to visit.

The red sandstone cliffs are so beautiful.

This is an aerial photo that was in one of the shops to give you a better perception of what the East Point area looks like.

We just loved all the churches.  No matter how small the towns there was always at least 2 churches and some quite large and ornate.
