May 9: Another Day in Memphis

We started the morning tour at Sun Records.  We almost skipped it because it was on the other end of town, but so glad we didn't.  It was really interesting to see just how much Sun Records had to do with the beginnings of many GREAT careers.  Elvis almost didn't get discovered because Sam Phillips was not there the day he went in to cut his first record.  Fortunately for him Marion Kiesler, Sam's assistant, was and she recognized his talent.  It still took over a year for her to get Elvis and Sam together at the same time in the studio and as luck would have it....a star was born!  It took a little more than that, but it was interesting how close it came to not happening.  Lots of great stories thanks to a super tour guide.  If you go...take the tour!
We had fabulous BBQ ribs at BB Kings on Beale Street.
Walked down to the Lorraine Motel/Civil Rights Museum which is truly amazing!  Another recommendation from the Scott's and so glad we took the time.  Unfortunately we ended up rushing through it to get back to The Peabody just in time to see the evening Duck Walk.  I think you could spend many hours wandering through the museum, but it's a gut wrenching story.  I came away ashamed and embarrassed for my own race.
