August 22 THE Bridge and Fort Knox

Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory

The new bridge is located on the site of the old Waldo Hancock Bridge

A little hard to read, but you get the drift....it's a pretty significant structure.

There's an elevator up to the observation tower and then you climb three flights of stairs.  The view from the top is pretty awesome.

Looking down at Fort Knox

Looking down at the bridge from the observation tower.
This was a paper mill in Bucksport.  It employed 350 people, but was closed down because of Union issues and is now being destroyed.  We met a worker who was involved with the destruction, but he had also been an employee and he was very emotional when he told us about the Mill closing.  This shot was from the top of the observation tower.

Seriously hoping for some good Fall color before we get home.

This is one section of the new span of the bridge to show you how the bridge was built.

From there we went to Fort Knox

The town of Bucksport.  Heavily effected by the loss of the paper mill.

The Fort is HUGE and built of granite and brick.  How they did the construction when they did is amazing.

Wild Blueberry fields

Sectioned off for raking.

The Campground where we stayed.
