June 15 Drive up to Soo Locks and Tahquamenon Falls

The tower is right next door to the church.  From there we learned so much of the history of the locks.  There's a video before you go up that tells the history of the locks.  One of the fascinating tidbits of info from the video was that before the locks they use to pull the cargo ships from one lake and roll them down the street to the other lake and it took three and a half months!!!  Can you imagine??  More amazing is that someone figured out how to build the locks and what a difference it made to trade and commerce in the area.

The bridge to Canada

Tour boat going through the locks.  Note the ship at the end, waiting to go through the lock.

The cargo ship is in the other lock, but we watched it go through from the viewing platform.

Note how high in the water the ship is.  By the time it's ready to go through the lock you can barely see the top tip of the anchor on the side.

Pull, pull, pull!!!

It still had a ways to go, but it was amazing watching it go down.

An aerial photo of the locks in the museum next to the locks

The lower section of Tahquamenon Falls.  By the time we finally got to the falls it started pouring rain.  We stopped at the ranger station for coffee and with lots of luck it just rained a little so we could walk to the viewing point for the big falls.
